Unique handmade dot art with African soul

Once upon a time, long, long ago….in 2022…. the story of Mama Jax began when I was offered a position in Cape Town. I had (some years before) allowed the fairest Cape the privilege of homing my two grown, perfect children. Yes, perfect. I have perfect children (I know you’ve heard that saying that “nobody is perfect”, but whoever said that clearly hasn’t met my two). Anyway, I digress: I relocated.

In finding ways to meet new people and pass the time, I joined local craft classes. Something about the coastal air brings out the creative side of me. It didn’t take me long to discover and become addicted to dot art!

I started experimenting. No….just because it’s Cape Town, don’t tar us all with that twig! I started experimenting with dotting. Dotting patterns with paint. My first Dotted Map of Africa was not a simple project. Although I couldn’t quite articulate it, I knew that I wanted it to reflect Africa’s dynamic spirit. Various folk that saw my work-in-progress found the most creative ways of trying to compliment it. My wonderful, patient teacher (shout-out to LindyLoo!) realised that I had a picture in my head of what I wanted to do (either that, or exasperation and sympathy kept her from offering her usual friendly advice). Once complete though, I received really positive feedback on my project and folk encouraged me to consider selling my items.

So it was that the idea of a small home craft business was born. No two pieces are the same, I have to tell you, and every dot is placed with purpose and inspired by the vibrant energy of the continent.

Why “Mama Jax“? Well, my mom and dad named me Jacqueline (no one else gets to call me that). Acquaintances call me Jackie (not unique enough). My sister and a handful of those closest to me call me Jacks (too personal). Dear former colleagues told me that my African name is Mama Jax – and I rather like it!

By selecting one of my colourful creations, you’re not only adding a touch of Africa to a home or work space, but you’re supporting a local artisan too!

I look forward to creating something special for you.

Ubuntu! I am because we are!
